I’m Nicholas anak nyagang (A120585) and Gloria anak muya(A120090) has done our reaches on language teaching and learning. This is what we found in our assignment.

Definition of concordance is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in a book or body of work, with their immediate contexts. Because of the time and difficulty and expense involved in creating a concordance in the pre-computer era, only works of special importance, such as the works of Shakespeare, had concordances prepared for them.

Even with the use of computers, producing a concordance (whether on paper or in a computer) may require much manual work, because they often include additional material, including commentary on, or definitions of, the indexed words, and topical cross-indexing that is not yet possible with computer-generated and computerized concordances.

However, when the text of a work is on a computer, a search function can carry out the basic task of a concordance, and is in some respects even more versatile than one on paper.

A bilingual concordance is a concordance based on aligned parallel text.

Concordancers and Concordancing of English E-Texts

A simple concordance of an English e-text as corpus is illustrated in Figure

1, displaying the results of a search for ‘handsome’ in Jane Austen’s 1815 novel , Emma,3 using the Windows program, MonoConc Pro 2.0. The word ‘handsome’ has multiple meanings and usages;4 a handsome letter or reply refers to appropriate speech or wording, and can imply gracefulness of style. It is used in reference to a generous gift from a certain Colonel Campbell, whose income (by pay and appointments) is also rather handsome; that is, the income is of a considerable sum. One or two rooms in a house (the Abbey) are described as handsome— that is, conveying the sense of rooms of a fairly large size and presumably rather grand and formal—contrasting with the rest of the (many) rooms in that house that are merely ‘comfortable.’ And in reference to a person, one who is handsome

is one with a fine form or figure (and usually with respect to full size or

stateliness); thus, in Jane Austen’s time and into Victorian England, both men

and women may be described as handsome

the example; “he was reckoned very Handsome; his person much admired”

Figure 1. Search for ‘handsome,’ in Jane Austen’s Emma (1815).

Figure 1 contains two vertically-arranged windows. The lower window contains

a KWIC (Keyword-in-Context) display of the search results for one keyword,

namely, ‘handsome.’ As shown at the bottom-left corner of the program,

the corpus contains 38 occurrences (‘matches,’ ‘hits,’ or ‘tokens’, as in ‘typetoken’

distinction) of the keyword. Eleven of the occurrences are displayed in the

lower window of the figure, with each token of the keyword highlighted, and the

context to its left and right displayed as well. At the same time, the entire line of

the second token of ‘handsome’ is also highlighted. The full context of that token

As a conclusion, concordance is the language corpus that has been use as the basis of dictionaries and teaching materials. It is also help in the vocabulary, how the rules in the concordance have being applied into writing since early age.

My name is Nicholas anak Nyagang, matrik no, A120585. My expression during the time I sit for this test, I feel really excited to take the exam. When the time I going through the exam I found that is very difficult to do the test, this is because the first time I told the exam was in English version, unfortunately the version was in basaha melayu, I’m not saying that I can’t understand bahasa, but the subject that I study was in English. Many of the answer and the question make me confuses for example; “peranti” in bahasa, in English is “software”, “ingatan baca sahaja” in bahasa but in English is “ROM” and many others question I can’t understand.

In addition, after I finish my test even I don get the best result then I expected, I’m feel happy because it a little bit challenger to me even it in bahasa. After all, then I know English and bahasa to me a little bit hard because we need to balance both of it. The advantage of the online test it is good to exposes the ict to the student so that they can understand better about the ICT. Other then that, it will help the teacher to deliver he or her teaching effectively, using online test teacher can get the result on the sport without mark the student paper because computer will take that part as well.

In addition, using blog is useful learning experience to me. In each blog, its consists different view of variety people around the world on particular topics. It provides a better insight for me and knowledge for analysis before I make my own perspective and at least supportive towards any parties. Besides, blog is a channel where it is free from the control and government of the ruling party such as government. This encourage people to be more outspoken in voicing out their stance which to is neutral to all party. Variety of the existence of blog which stimulates the creativity and compositeness among blogger, causes them to use more innovative, accessible and more relax material to ease understand and provides clear representation of the world. What I had experience trough using blog it is very effective and learning because I can share information with others.

Journal Name:

British Journal of Educational Technology

Source:

British Journal of Educational Technology v. 38 no. 6 (November 2007) p. 962-76

Publication Year:

2007

Abstract:

In many countries, information and communication technology (ICT) has a clear impact on the development of educational curricula. In Flanders, the education government has identified and defined a framework of ICT competencies for expected outcomes, related to knowledge, skills and attitudes that pupils are expected to achieve at the end of primary school. However, it has never been examined whether teachers are using ICT in accordance with the competencies proposed by the Flemish government. In order to answer this question, a survey was conducted among 570 respondents in a stratified sample of 53 primary schools. Results show that teachers mainly focus on the development of technical ICT skills, whereas the ICT curriculum centres on the integrated use of ICT within the learning and teaching process. This indicates the existence of a gap between the proposed and the implemented curriculum for ICT. The paper concludes with the potential value of a school-based ICT curriculum that ‘translates’ the national ICT-related curriculum into an ICT plan as part of the overall school policy.   A description of the new technologies used in transforming dental educationAbstract Information and communications technology (ICT) is a universal term describing the use of technology and media to disseminate and share knowledge and information. Educational media provide a means by which information can be communicated between teacher and learner. In this context, the aim of this digest is to summarise and describe the spectrum of tools available. All technologies used in education have their strengths and weaknesses. Variety needs to be balanced by economy. However, it must be remembered that technology is not the overriding issue. The design of the learning environment and the learning experience itself are far more important. Technologies are generally flexible and can be used in a variety of ways. Knowledge of these technologies will help guide appropriate selection. The following tools are described: 1. Telecommunications services; 2. Communications tools (social software) including email, newsgroups, weblogs and wikis; 3. Richmedia in interactive training and learning; 4. Compact discs (CDs) and digital video discs (DVDs); 5. Virtual learning environments (VLE); 6. Sophisticated communications – videoconferencing, webcasting and podcasts; 7. Interactive television; and 8. Virtual reality. © British Dental Journal 2008.RFID solutions to support home telecare information flowsAbstract Ø       Home Telecare is defined as the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to increase support for people living will illness or disability in their normal activities of daily living, the management of their condition and in their communication with health providers. With an ageing population, New Zealand needs to increase the effort devoted to caring for people with long-term conditions (LTC) in their own homes and Home Telecare is one possible solution. In this paper we discuss the need for increased investment and better management of information for home-based chronic care and disease management. Telecare systems have the potential to enhance the management and integration of home based care through the provision of automated information collected from home telecare or assisted living systems. An example of a novel telecare system, based on the use of radio frequency identification systems is given. This system might be able to assist with finding objects as well as being able to monitor activity in some detail. The potential information flows from this system are described. The information flows that are generated by telecare systems may become important part of the management of long-term and chronic conditions. Issues arising from the use of automated information from home-based care systems are discussed and some potential avenues for improvement and future research are offered.

Telemonitoring Systems Interoperability Challenge: An Updated Review of the Applicability of ISO/IEEE 11073 Standards for Interoperability in Telemonitoring

Advances in Information and Communication Technologies, ICT, are bringing new opportunities and use cases in the field of systems and Personal Health Devices used for the telemonitoring of citizens in Home or Mobile scenarios. At a time of such challenges, this review arises from the need to identify robust technical telemonitoring solutions that are both open and interoperable. These systems demand standardized solutions to be cost effective and to take advantage of standardized operation and interoperability. Thus, the fundamental challenge is to design plug-&-play devices that, either as individual elements or as components, can be incorporated in a simple way into different Telecare systems, perhaps configuring a personal user network. Moreover, there is an increasing market pressure from companies not traditionally involved in medical markets, asking for a standard for Personal Health Devices, which foresee a vast demand for telemonitoring, wellness, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and e-health applications. However, the newly emerging situations imply very strict requirements for the protocols involved in the communication. The ISO/IEEE 11073 family of standards is adapting and moving in order to face the challenge and might appear the best positioned international standards to reach this goal. This work presents an updated survey of these standards, trying to track the changes that are being fulfilled, and tries to serve as a starting-point for those who want to familiarize themselves with them.

Coping with change in ICT-based learning environments: Newly qualified Rwandan teachers’ reflectionsAbstract The overarching aim of this study is to investigate how newly qualified Rwandan teachers can contribute to the creation of theoretical and practical knowledge for professional development with information and communication technology (ICT). Questionnaires, focus groups and interviews were used for data collection. The findings show that novice teachers are motivated to acquire ICT and that they succeed in situations where school administrators grant easy access to computers. The novice teachers expressed a strong desire to be trusted and be allowed time to use computers and related skills in their learning and teaching. These views are discussed in terms of learning conditions created in schools so that participants become active, responsible and committed practitioners. We assume that such attitudes can be a model for their future roles in fostering change in social practice. For example, this study shows that gender equity becomes an aspect of change in an ICT-learning environment, which creates new opportunities for continuous education. To achieve this, as revealed by the findings, there is a need to develop school-based curricula, appropriate pedagogy and teacher professional development in the area of ICT literacy, which allows the teachers to develop a critical mind to the new tools. © 2007 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Reading comprehension.

The Pink by Patricia Polacco

http://www.authorama.com/grimms-fairy-tales-32.html

There was once upon a time a queen to whom God had given no children. Every morning she went into the garden and prayed to God in heaven to bestow on her a son or a daughter. Then an angel from heaven came to her and said: ’Be at rest, you shall have a son with the power of wishing, so that whatsoever in the world he wishes for, that shall he have.’ Then she went to the king, and told him the joyful tidings, and when the time was come she gave birth to a son, and the king was filled with gladness.

Every morning she went with the child to the garden where the wild beasts were kept, and washed herself there in a clear stream. It happened once when the child was a little older, that it was lying in her arms and she fell asleep. Then came the old cook, who knew that the child had the power of wishing, and stole it away, and he took a hen, and cut it in pieces, and dropped some of its blood on the queen’s apron and on her dress. Then he carried the child away to a secret place, where a nurse was obliged to suckle it, and he ran to the king and accused the queen of having allowed her child to be taken from her by the wild beasts. When the king saw the blood on her apron, he believed this, fell into such a passion that he ordered a high tower to be built, in which neither sun nor moon could be seen and had his wife put into it, and walled up. Here she was to stay for seven years without meat or drink, and die of hunger. But God sent two angels from heaven in the shape of white doves, which flew to her twice a day, and carried her food until the seven years were over.

The cook, however, thought to himself: ’If the child has the power of wishing, and I am here, he might very easily get me into trouble.’ So he left the palace and went to the boy, who was already big enough to speak, and said to him: ’Wish for a beautiful palace for yourself with a garden, and all else that pertains to it.’ Scarcely were the words out of the boy’s mouth, when everything was there that he had wished for. After a while the cook said to him: ’It is not well for you to be so alone, wish for a pretty girl as a companion.’ Then the king’s son wished for one, and she immediately stood before him, and was more beautiful than any painter could have painted her. The two played together, and loved each other with all their hearts, and the old cook went out hunting like a nobleman. The thought occurred to him, however, that the king’s son might some day wish to be with his father, and thus bring him into great peril. So he went out and took the maiden aside, and said: ’Tonight when the boy is asleep, go to his bed and plunge this knife into his heart, and bring me his heart and tongue, and if you do not do it, you shall lose your life.’ Thereupon he went away, and when he returned next day she had not done it, and said: ’Why should I shed the blood of an innocent boy who has never harmed anyone?’ The cook once more said: ’If you do not do it, it shall cost you your own life.’ When he had gone away, she had a little hind brought to her, and ordered her to be killed, and took her heart and tongue, and laid them on a plate, and when she saw the old man coming, she said to the boy: ’Lie down in your bed, and draw the clothes over you.’ Then the wicked wretch came in and said: ’Where are the boy’s heart and tongue?’ The girl reached the plate to him, but the king’s son threw off the quilt, and said: ’You old sinner, why did you want to kill me? Now will I pronounce thy sentence. You shall become a black poodle and have a gold collar round your neck, and shall eat burning coals, till the flames burst forth from your throat.’ And when he had spoken these words, the old man was changed into a poodle dog, and had a gold collar round his neck, and the cooks were ordered to bring up some live coals, and these he ate, until the flames broke forth from his throat. The king’s son remained there a short while longer, and he thought of his mother, and wondered if she were still alive. At length he said to the maiden: ’I will go home to my own country; if you will go with me, I will provide for you.’ ’Ah,’ she replied, ’the way is so long, and what shall I do in a strange land where I am unknown?’ As she did not seem quite willing, and as they could not be parted from each other, he wished that she might be changed into a beautiful pink, and took her with him.

Then he went away to his own country, and the poodle had to run after him. He went to the tower in which his mother was confined, and as it was so high, he wished for a ladder which would reach up to the very top. Then he mounted up and looked inside, and cried: ’Beloved mother, Lady Queen, are you still alive, or are you dead?’ She answered: ’I have just eaten, and am still satisfied,’ for she thought the angels were there. Said he: ’I am your dear son, whom the wild beasts were said to have torn from your arms; but I am alive still, and will soon set you free.’ Then he descended again, and went to his father, and caused himself to be announced as a strange huntsman, and asked if he could offer him service. The king said yes, if he was skilful and could get game for him, he should come to him, but that deer had never taken up their quarters in any part of the district or country. Then the huntsman promised to procure as much game for him as he could possibly use at the royal table. So he summoned all the huntsmen together, and bade them go out into the forest with him. And he went with them and made them form a great circle, open at one end where he stationed himself, and began to wish. Two hundred deer and more came running inside the circle at once, and the huntsmen shot them. Then they were all placed on sixty country carts, and driven home to the king, and for once he was able to deck his table with game, after having had none at all for years.

Now the king felt great joy at this, and commanded that his entire household should eat with him next day, and made a great feast. When they were all assembled together, he said to the huntsman: ’As you are so clever, you shall sit by me.’ He replied: ’Lord King, your majesty must excuse me, I am a poor huntsman.’ But the king insisted on it, and said: ’You shall sit by me,’ until he did it. Whilst he was sitting there, he thought of his dearest mother, and wished that one of the king’s principal servants would begin to speak of her, and would ask how it was faring with the queen in the tower, and if she were alive still, or had perished. Hardly had he formed the wish than the marshal began, and said: ’Your majesty, we live joyously here, but how is the queen living in the tower? Is she still alive, or has she died?’ But the king replied: ’She let my dear son be torn to pieces by wild beasts; I will not have her named.’ Then the huntsman arose and said: ’Gracious lord father she is alive still, and I am her son, and I was not carried away by wild beasts, but by that wretch the old cook, who tore me from her arms when she was asleep, and sprinkled her apron with the blood of a chicken.’ Thereupon he took the dog with the golden collar, and said: ’That is the wretch!’ and caused live coals to be brought, and these the dog was compelled to devour before the sight of all, until flames burst forth from its throat. On this the huntsman asked the king if he would like to see the dog in his true shape, and wished him back into the form of the cook, in the which he stood immediately, with his white apron, and his knife by his side. When the king saw him he fell into a passion, and ordered him to be cast into the deepest dungeon. Then the huntsman spoke further and said: ’Father, will you see the maiden who brought me up so tenderly and who was afterwards to murder me, but did not do it, though her own life depended on it?’ The king replied: ’Yes, I would like to see her.’ The son said: ’Most gracious father, I will show her to you in the form of a beautiful flower,’ and he thrust his hand into his pocket and brought forth the pink, and placed it on the royal table, and it was so beautiful that the king had never seen one to equal it.

Then the son said: ’Now will I show her to you in her own form,’ and wished that she might become a maiden, and she stood there looking so beautiful that no painter could have made her look more so.And the king sent two waiting-maids and two attendants into the tower, to fetch the queen and bring her to the royal table. But when she was led in she ate nothing, and said: ’The gracious and merciful God who has supported me in the tower, will soon set me free.’ She lived three days more, and then died happily, and when she was buried, the two white doves which had brought her food to the tower, and were angels of heaven, followed her body and seated themselves on her grave. The aged king ordered the cook to be torn in four pieces, but grief consumed the king’s own heart, and he soon died. His son married the beautiful maiden whom he had brought with him as a flower in his pocket, and whether they are still alive or not, is known to God.
